Memorial Hospital: Fremont, Ohio
Space Description: Patient rooms, health care offices and nurse stations
Job Time Frame: 7 months
Challenge: Memorial Health Care Systems needed to upgrade the hospital’s network infrastructure from CAT 5 to CAT 6 cabling and also incorporate the BICSI & EIA/TIA-1179 Healthcare Standards as well as the NFPA 99 Fire Codes for Healthcare. The work required had needed to be completed in phases so as not to interrupt client care and daily functioning of the hospital. The hospital IT staff needed specialists outside of their realm of expertise to design the Network Infrastructure Upgrade with all specifics to be produced in Auto CAD. In order to not to take away from the day-to-day IT responsibilities the staff required project management on the installation to ensure all standards, codes and manufactures specifications were met. Also a cabling product specification with installation standards manual needed produced so that all properties owned or leased by Memorial fall under these guidelines. An experienced team of technicians needed to install the data center upgrades and to perform other moves, adds and changes while the main project was in progress, so the cabling contractor chosen could focus on the work at hand.
Linxus Solution: Linxus provided a timeline and plan of action through the work of our staff RCDD at weekly meetings for 2 months prior to the start of the installation. Through the RCDD’s strategy and design in Auto CAD, the number of Telecommunications Rooms (TR) was condensed from three or four to one per floor. All cables and modular inserts were color coded to indicate each different critical category in the hospital, including Data, Nurse Call, Physio Monitoring, Television, Wireless and Security Cameras. For ease of use, Linxus created a database for all cross connects which indicated the room, jack number, patch panel, port, switch ID, card and slot. All patch cables had a computer generated wrap around label at both ends with information of that particular cables orgin and destination. Specifications for environmental requirements such as air temperature, air exchange rate, fire suppression and UPS power were set in each closet. Backbone cables, fire stopping, runway systems and grounding systems were all upgraded. The duties of project management included managing of the installation and creation of a change order form and the process thereof. Financial responsibilities included sign off of all invoices and proposals before CEO’s final approvals.
Results: Quicker data transfer and download speeds were provided with the upgraded CAT 6 and Laser Optimized Multi-Mode (LOMM) and Single Mode (SM) fiber. Memorial Hospital now has an efficient and unified system. Troubleshooting and downtime are kept to a minimum through the database, specifications and color coding. All technology was brought into BICSI and EIA/TIA standards and NFPA 99 codes. Even when problems arose, action was taken to get the job completed properly and in a timely manner. The hospital is able to perform their daily responsibilities of providing care to their clients without having to worry about technology malfunctioning or taking away from their quality of service.
